Whistle Down the Wind workshops @ Thornhill School (c) David Tiernan
In July 2011 we delivered two half-day workshops with twenty pupils aged 12 – 15 years at Thornhill School, Sunderland. Delivered by our Musical Director Marco Romano and Stage Director Simon Raybould, the aim of the workshops was to introduce pupils to the repertoire of Whistle Down The Wind and singing/acting activities that gave them an idea of what is involved when performing in an operatic production.
The workshop content was built around a song from the show, ‘Shall we close our minds,’ and activities included singing in unison and canon, diction, characterisation, blocking and movement on stage, and devising through improvising. The feedback from pupils and staff was extremely positive. Lucy, aged 12, said:
“Thank you for such a great time. I have loved every minute of it. THANK YOU!!!! “
Emily, aged 13, said:
“I really enjoyed working with Music in the Minster, thank you for two fun days!”
Jacqui Bennet, Head of Music at Thornhill School, said:
“Simon and Marco created a friendly and fun atmosphere which encouraged the students to participate freely and without the fear of failing to cope. Students always benefit from working with professionals and I am sure that this experience will help with their self-confidence, not just in music and drama activities, but also in any situation which requires team work. I would always welcome workshops of the quality that you are able to provide and I know that the students had a memorable and enriching experience.”
