In the summer of 2015 we set out to prove that opera really is for everyone, with a Singing Roadshow visiting community venues in Red House, Hylton Castle, Whitburn, and Roker.
Led by leading opera singers Emily Smith and David Pisaro, the workshops were fun and full of energy, taking participants on a whistle-stop tour of one of the world’s most famous operas, Carmen. Together we told the story of a love triangle between a gypsy fortune teller, a soldier and a bull-fighter at breakneck speed, with participants singing the famous and very catchy choruses!
Sixty people aged between seven and eighty four years of age attended, many new to both singing and opera. Here’s what some of them thought of the workshop:
Margaret Trotter said:
“The spontaneity and enthusiasm of the leaders was fantastic. They made it so easy for us to take part.”
Anne Byers said:
“I loved the informal, friendly atmosphere.”
Sherrie McKean said:
“It was entertaining as well as educational. Emily and David were great fun”
Jane Child said:
“I enjoyed singing together & being taught by experts. I had fun”
