Carmen in an Hour - Summer Streets 2014

Summer Streets

We are delighted to have been involved in Summer Streets - a free music festival held in Thompson Park, Southwick on Saturday 19 July.

The programme was been organised by The Futureheads' Ross Millard on behalf of The Cultural Spring, an Arts Council-funded project bringing arts and culture to ten wards across Sunderland and South Tyneside.

Leading opera singers Emily Smith and David Pisaro hosted the workshop Carmen In An Hour!, proving what we all know - that opera is fun!

The hour-long workshop started with some fun warm ups before a whistle-stop tour of one the world’s most popular operas, Carmen. Emily and David performed solos and lead everyone in singing the famous choruses - it was fun, full of energy, and if anyone has seen the Reduced Shakespeare Company, then you’ll have an idea of what took place!

The whole festival was a fantastic event, with a wide range of music performed by both professionals and local musicians. Here is a link to a great article about our workshop in the Sunderland Echo, and a lovely film The Cultural Spring put together, which captures the event wonderfully. Look out for a snippet from our workshop at 03:07 minutes!
